Suan

SuanSuan is 9 years old. His parents were killed during the civil war (1997-98). Following their deaths, he had to stay with his uncle, whose wife abused him physically, verbally, and emotionally.

Upon hearing about him, investigations were made and he was taken into the Home in January 2002. At his interview in December 2001, the board told him about the possibility of staying at the Home and also asked if he would rather go back to stay with his uncle. Weeping bitterly and clinging to our legs, he begged us not to send him back.

Suan has been at the Home for more than two years now. To date, he still suffers bedwetting problems. He is very aggressive, selfish, and destructive, and he often lies to cover his mistakes. When asked why, he says that he is afraid of being punished. We suspect that these behaviors are rooted in his past life. He is continuing with counseling and is learning that lies do not solve his problems. He is learning to own up to his actions so that he can be forgiven and helped. Slowly but surely, he is learning to be honest, to consider others, and to be kind and compassionate. He is taking his first steps toward becoming a self-reliant adult.

Khol

KholSeven-year-old Khol is one of the victims of both the civil war (1997-1998) and AIDS. Her father was killed in 1998 and she was left alone with her mother. After the death of her husband, overwhelmed with financial problems, Khol's mother started to deal drugs. After some time, she became addicted to drugs, was promiscuous, and is now infected with AIDS. Khol's mother is in a rehabilitation center.

Khol came to Covenant Children's Home in 2001. Talking with her, we learn that she suffered abuses from the men in her mother's life. At first, she would never look anyone in the eye and would often retreat into her own world. She is now slowly coming out of her shell and is literally blooming in the love and care of others around her. She calls Lian "Daddy" and Clara "Mummy." It is our hope and prayer that she will one day be a self-reliant adult.
