Latest Report: (updated 7/21/2010)
Dear Friends of Peter and Margaret,
This month Margaret and I were invited to conduct a weekend marriage seminar for the Westminster Theological College in Queensland, Australia. This was our first visit to this College (and our second only visit ever to Australia) whose Principal (President) is Dr. Terry Clarke, an MTW missionary. We stayed with Terry and Francine and learnt much about the College and its operations. WTC is located at the Grace Christian Church, a member church of the Westminster Presbyterian Church of Australia. WTC is very similar to Grace Theological College in New Zealand in its aims, purposes and vision. There will be future opportunities for mutual encouragement between us.
Our weekend marriage seminar is one of three seminars that Grace Theological Colleges in New Zealand offers churches. The other two are concerned with pastoral care and encouragement, and a seminar on Jesus in the OT. The marriage seminar gives Margaret and me the opportunity to draw on our training in America, our own experience of being married, and of teaching courses in marriage. In the seminar we dealt with the biblical foundations of marriage, conflict resolution in marriage, communication in marriage, what to do when couples can't agree, and what to do if you are in an abusive relationship.
The seminar included a role play where Margaret and I acted out a scenario where the wife is upset about something but the husband would rather read his newspaper than listen to her. In the role play we demonstrate both communication and conflict resolution. In any conflict intimacy is only a sentence away when both hearts are exercised by the gospel dynamics of repentance, confession and forgiveness. One issue that often comes up in these seminars concerns the issue of forgiveness when the other party insists they have done nothing wrong.
Overall it was a very encouraging and enriching time for us, and a chance to profile the counseling ministry with couples that the Lord has given Margaret and me in New Zealand. We were also able to take a break and visit some of the wildlife and beaches in Australia. Even though it is mid-winter here the temperature in Queensland was much warmer than in New Zealand, which made it a delightful visit in every way.
