The island of Ireland is a gospel paradox. The gospel is stronger in Northern Ireland than anywhere else in Europe, and over 500 of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland's (PCI) 550 congregations are located there. The main gospel weakness there is that the current generation of ministers is going into retirement and there is a lack of young men entering the ministry. On the other hand, over 80% of the island's population lives in the Republic of Ireland, which has the lowest percentage of evangelicals in the English speaking world, at less than 1%. Currently, there are less than 50 congregations of the PCI serving all the people there.
Both Ireland and Northern Ireland are broken societies with very high levels of substance abuse, family disintegration, violence, cynicism and despair. We know that the gospel is the only thing that can change this, because "where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty." (2 Corinthians 3:17).
After graduation in December 2010, Rory is hoping to return to Ireland to serve with the PCI. After a two year internship, Rory should be able to serve in either Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland. Rory has the blessing of both parents being Irish, his Dad from a Presbyterian family, his Mum from a Catholic family, and he has also worked in Dublin, so he knows the culture well.
We are trying to raise funds to move our family back to Ireland. As a way of supporting missionary work in Ireland, we are about as cost effective as it gets! We only need enough money to get us and our stuff back home, and get set up there. Then, (DV), we should be in paid ministry with the PCI from September 2011. After that, we won't need financial support from the US, but we keen to keep up relationships with churches and individuals who help us get home and would love your ongoing prayer support.
